A Survey of Knowlege and Attitude Toward the Sex Education and AIDS Among Adolescents, Parents, and Teachers


Abstract
The AIDS epidemic is becoming a serious health problem in our society. However, we do not have. an accurate statistics on the number of full blown AIDS cases or the carriers of the AIDS virus in Korea. It is necessary to develop a public education program to prevent further spread of the AIDS. In this materialistic society, much of the. content of mass media encourage hedonistic and unhealthy sexuality and it feeds wrong information to the adolescents.
The purpose of this study is to explore the opinions and experiences on sex education and knowledge and attitude toward the AIDS among 532 adolescents, 399 parents and 478 teachers. Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to suggest concrete materials which should be included in the sex education.
The results of the study are ; 1) the majority of the students and the parents want sex education in school ; 2) accurate sex information, develop sound value sysgem, and prevention of sexual assault are the main reasons for the need of sex education ; 3) existing sex
education was not satisfactory for the students ; 4) existing sex education is too abstract ; 5) they want to learn more about the infection process and the methods of the prevention for the AIDS.
Some of the implication of this study include; 1) sex education is a holistic education and it. should be started at home ; 2) the government need to control the books and the media containing hedonistic and unsound sex information and 3) it is necessary to develop educational materials for AIDS prevention and teaching.
